“Silence implies consent” is a concept of social interaction, which states roughly that people tend to assume lack of response to an action as tacit approval of that action.

An example of the thought process: If nobody complains about the plastic gnome I placed in my front yard, then it must be that nobody’s bothered by it. In fact, everybody may be bothered by it; they’re just being silent. You can’t be sure that their silence truly means they are consenting to it.

On the other side of the coin, if you are being silent about an issue, be aware that others may very well be interpreting that as consent.

http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?SilenceImpliesConsent

If a guy/girl kisses a guy/girl after a date or just randomly in the park and they stay silent it is a form of consent to keep doing it.

If you dont speak up about anything your against or for then people will assume that you are ok with what is going on or what isnt going on.

Speak up!

The Highway of tears is Highway sixteen. People call it the highway of tears because it has been the link in around eightteen murders all woman that most if not all are from a native back ground, they are blaming a serial killer for. These murders have been happening for over 30 years. Although police are telling us they are making progress they have no leads, suspect or witnesses. These murders have hurt the native community greatly. the highway of tears murders are not getting enough publicity because they are one of the many minorities in Canada. The discrimination that is going on needs to be stopped! Canada is a very diverse country and its not going to change.

* 81 per cent of single mothers with children under six live in poverty.

* women have a poverty rate of 22 per cent compared to the men’s rate of 18 per cent.

* the average income for women is $22,500 compared to $36,704 for men.

* 29 per cent of seniors over 75 live in poverty. Of those, 36 per cent are women and 18 per cent are men.

* aboriginal women have a poverty rate of 40 per cent, almost double the rate for all women.

The reasons more women live in poverty than men revolve mostly around their dual role as mothers and workers in the labour force, said senior planner Sandy Shaw, who authored the report.

Women often take time off from their jobs to raise their children and are more likely to work part time and in contractual work.

“The presence of children is the No. 1 factor in keeping women in poverty,”

http://www.thespec.com/printArticle/191281

Single mothers have it rough. I know first hand because my parents have split and my sister lives with my mom and i live with my dad and my mom is having a rougher time paying bills and supporting herself and my sister. Single parents moms and dads need a lot more help in raising their children and making money to have a roof over their head and food on the table.

IN the early 1980s, in the lowlands of Mozambique, a new technology of warfare emerged that would sweep across Africa and soon the rest of the world: the child soldier.

Rebel commanders had constructed a four-foot tall killing machine that cut its way through village after village and nearly overran the government. Its trail was smoking huts and sawed off ears.

The Mozambicans learned that children were the perfect weapon: easily manipulated, intensely loyal, fearless and, most important, in endless supply.

Today, human rights groups say, there are 300,000 child soldiers worldwide. And experts say the problem is deepening as the nature of conflict itself changes — especially in Africa.

I can’t believe the things they are doing to kids all over the world. This is one of those things that need to be stopped asap .Children shouldn’t be beaten and forced in to killing people, that will just make them monsters because that will teach them that is the right way to live.

It is important that we fight child rights vilations like this one.

The are children all over the world being abused. They need you!

My personal beliefs and values can effect others, locally and globally. They effect others in many ways. I litter and it hurts the world, I drive my car and it pollutes a little more. If I sponser a child it could save his or her life. Almost everything you do effects somebody some how, it could be in a bad way or a good way. Alot of your personal beliefs and values can be good, you could have beliefs like its not good to smoke or drink and drive and most likely that will be reflected in people that look up to you like fans or childern. But it can also go the other way you can carry a gun and believe in white supremisy and that could effect millions like it has.

I think by saying this quote Alex Sanchez ment in a way that your hurting your self by being homophobic because you are closing your self off to a big group of people that could be friends or at least help you the this journey we call life. And other people are being hurt because your hurting there feelings with comments or slang you use. People should learn at a young age that everyone is equal with your white black or purple or homosexual or heterosexual. But at the same time like a child doesn’t know a crime is wrong they don’t or wouldn’t know what to do. So it a touchy subject and people need to find out the perfect age to start talking a teaching these ways. There are alot of people against this and it will be a hard fight to win but it is worth the work.

Empty promises: The Olympics have failed to keep its housing commitment Mon, 02/23/2009 – 16:01 — Darren Empty promises:

The Olympics have failed to keep its housing commitment By Sean Condon Photo by Jay Black When Vancouver handed in its official bid to host the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, it included an unprecedented package of promises that would ensure Vancouver’s inner-city communities wouldn’t be adversely affected, and would in fact benefit, from the Games. The Inner-City Inclusive Commitment Statement made 37 “goals and objectives” to protect low-income neighbourhoods and included everything from ticket affordability to civil liberties. However, perhaps the most significant promise made was around housing. In the commitment statement, VANOC and the federal, provincial and municipal governments promised to:

a) Protect rental housing stock

b) Provide as many alternative forms of temporary accommodation for Winter Games visitors and workers

c) Ensure people are not made homeless as a result of the Winter Games

d) Ensure residents are not involuntarily displaced, evicted or face unreasonable increases in rent due to the Winter Games

e) Provide an affordable housing legacy and start planning now

http://megaphonemagazine.com/content/empty_promises_olympics_have_failed_keep_its_housing_commitment.html

All of these promises are not being kept. People are being kicked out of there houses and once the olympics are over and the house are being sold back to the people the low income housing there used to be there wont be there anymore. a lot of people will be out of housing and have no where to go. the only people benefiting from this are the people that will make money in th end from selling the houses at higher prices.

A new study sheds light on “our most invisible prejudice” as a society: Uglyism.

Coined by a Canadian sociologist, “uglyism” describes the subtle but widespread discrimination experienced by people whose appearances lie south of the beauty equator mapped out by art, literature and film.

“We don’t realize the level of discrimination that we exercise against people who are less attractive than the norm,” says Anthony Synnott, a professor at Concordia University in Montreal.

“In a sense, it’s very visible; we’re judging people by their appearance all the time. But the prejudice about it is invisible because we aren’t aware we’re doing it.”
I like this article because you see things like this everyday. Pretty people get what they want first your at a store, the mall, or the coffee shop and they get served or helped first.
This “ism” isn’t thought about by most people i think it needs to be looked at a lot closer.

Barcelona is hosting the third International Congress on Islamic Feminism, where a group of prominent Muslim scholars have gathered to discuss some pressing issues facing Muslim women. Making a distinction between the particular socio-cultural contexts within which Islam was born and the universal principles of the religion, Muslim feminists seek to articulate new interpretations that make room for gender equality. Such interpretations need not necessarily follow binary logic’s either/or model, as they can be both pro-faith and pro-feminism. Muslim feminists argue that one can be both Muslim and feminist, but theirs is a daunting task. Not only do they have to fight with Islamists who want to impose their fixed view of sharia on the Muslim world, they also have to resist Western Orientalists whose treatment of Islam as a monolithic phenomenon leaves room for nothing but invalid generalizations of tribal, patriarchal, and misogynistic features of the Arabian Peninsula at the dawn of Islam.
